Air Ratchet Selection — Quick Reference
Pneumatic air ratchets COMBINE ACCESS capability of hand ratchet with SPEED of power tool — ideal for workshop fastening in CONFINED SPACES + production. Match drive size + torque + size to application.
| Air Ratchet Type | Best For |
|---|---|
| 1/4" Drive Air Ratchet | Small fastener + light access |
| 3/8" Drive Air Ratchet (Common) | Workshop standard automotive |
| 1/2" Drive Air Ratchet | Heavier fastener + truck |
| Compact / Mini Air Ratchet | Tight access — confined space |
| High-Torque Air Ratchet | Production + heavier work |
| Reversible Action | Tighten + loosen |
| Air Supply 90 psi + 4-6 cfm | Standard workshop |
Critical: Use IMPACT-RATED sockets — chrome shatters under air ratchet. Match torque rating to fastener — small fastener + high torque = stripped fastener. Brands: Sutton Tools, Maxigear. Companion: pneumatic tools, impact sockets + bits, ratchets + sockets.
Air Ratchets
Pneumatic air ratchets combine the access capability of a hand ratchet with the speed of a power tool — ideal for workshop fastening and removal tasks in confined spaces where an impact wrench is too large or too powerful. AIMS Industrial stocks Trax air ratchets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive for maintenance, automotive and general workshop use.
Where Air Ratchets Outperform
Air ratchets excel in tight, congested areas where impact wrenches cannot be swung or where the high impact torque would damage lighter fasteners or components. Engine bays, under-vehicle work, brake caliper bolts and fasteners in wiring looms are typical applications. The low-profile head allows the air ratchet to reach fasteners in recesses that even a compact impact driver cannot access.
Drive Sizes
1/4" drive air ratchets suit M4–M10 fasteners in light mechanical and electrical assembly work where speed, not torque, is the priority. 3/8" drive handles M8–M16 fasteners across standard automotive and industrial maintenance tasks — this is the most versatile size for workshop use. Torque output on air ratchets is relatively low (typically 40–80 Nm for 3/8" drive) — they are a speed tool, not a torque tool, and should be followed by a torque wrench when critical fastener torque is specified.
Air Supply
Air ratchets are efficient on compressed air — most operate effectively at 90 PSI with just 60–80 L/min (2–3 CFM), making them compatible with smaller workshop compressors.
