Air Impact Wrench Selection — Quick Reference
Pneumatic impact wrenches use ROTARY HAMMER mechanism delivering HIGH-TORQUE OUTPUT IN BURSTS — removing + tightening fasteners production speed. Workshop + automotive + truck + heavy machinery + production.
| Air Impact Wrench Type | Best For | Typical Torque |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" Drive Impact | Small + light fasteners | 50-100 Nm |
| 3/8" Drive Impact | Light automotive + workshop | 200-400 Nm |
| 1/2" Drive Impact | Standard automotive — workshop default | 700-1,500 Nm |
| 3/4" Drive Impact | Heavy truck + plant | 1,500-3,000+ Nm |
| 1" Drive Impact | Heaviest industrial + mining | 3,000-7,000+ Nm |
| Reversible | Tighten + loosen | — |
| Variable Torque (Adjustable) | Range of fasteners | — |
| Air Supply (90-100 psi) | Industrial compressor | — |
Critical: USE IMPACT-RATED SOCKETS ONLY — chrome sockets SHATTER under impact. Match drive size to fastener + torque. PPE — eye + ear protection mandatory. Brands: Sutton Tools, Maxigear, Trax. Companion: pneumatic tools, impact sockets + bits, air ratchets.
Air Impact Wrenches
Pneumatic impact wrenches use a rotary hammer mechanism to deliver high-torque output in bursts — removing and tightening fasteners far faster than a ratchet or conventional wrench. AIMS Industrial stocks air impact wrenches from Trax in 1/2", 3/4" and 1" drive configurations for mechanical, tyre, heavy equipment and industrial fastening applications.
Drive Size Selection
- 1/2" drive — the standard for automotive, light truck and general workshop use. Handles wheel nuts, suspension bolts and most mechanical fastening up to M20 in most materials. Compact and light enough for sustained overhead use.
- 3/4" drive — for heavy vehicle wheels, agricultural equipment, mining machinery and structural steel fastening up to M30. Substantially higher torque output than 1/2" drive.
- 1" drive — for the heaviest fastening applications on large equipment, where torque requirements exceed what 3/4" drive can reliably deliver.
Torque and Speed
Air impact wrench performance is defined by maximum torque (Nm) and free-speed (RPM). Higher free-speed increases fastening speed; higher torque rating determines the maximum fastener size that can be reliably removed. Most quality 1/2" air impact wrenches deliver 400–700 Nm — sufficient for all automotive applications and most industrial fastening.
Air Supply Requirements
Air impact wrenches require a minimum air supply of 170–200 L/min (6–7 CFM) at 90 PSI (6.2 bar). Undersized compressors or undersized air hose will reduce output torque significantly.
