Cordless Impact Wrenches — Metabo and HiKOKI

A cordless impact wrench gives you impact-wrench torque without a compressor or air hose, which suits mobile mechanics, field service, site work and any job away from the workshop. AIMS Industrial stocks brushless cordless impact wrenches from Metabo (18V) and HiKOKI (18V and 36V), in 1/2″ and 3/4″ square drive, as tool-only bodies and as kits. For workshops with a compressor, see our air impact wrenches. Not sure whether you need an impact wrench or an impact driver? Our Impact Driver vs Impact Wrench guide explains the difference.

Quick Reference — What's in This Range

Brand and Voltage Drive What's Available
Metabo 18V brushless 1/2″ 300 Nm tool only, 800 Nm (SSW 18 LTX 800 BL) tool only and kit, and a 1/2″ cordless impact wrench, tool only (602401850)
Metabo 18V brushless 3/4″ 1750 Nm tool only (LTX Class), and the SSW 18 LTX 1750 BL kit
Metabo combo kits 1/2″ and 3/4″ Impact wrench with a grease gun, or impact wrench with a grease gun and 125mm angle grinder, in 1/2″ and 3/4″ (1750 Nm) versions
HiKOKI 18V brushless 1/2″ WR18DH, skin only (tool only) and kit
HiKOKI 36V brushless 1/2″ WR36DB, WR36DE, WR36DG and WR36DH, mostly as both skin only and kit
HiKOKI 36V brushless 3/4″ WR36DA (skin only and kit) and WR36DF (skin only)

Tool Only or Kit?

Cordless tools sold as skin only or tool only come without a battery and charger. If you already own batteries from that brand, a tool-only body is the cheapest way in. Otherwise choose a kit, and check what is included on each product page before you order. Battery platform usually decides the brand: stay with the one you already own, because 18V and 36V batteries are not interchangeable between Metabo and HiKOKI.

Choosing a Drive Size and Torque

  • 1/2″ drive — the common size for cars and light commercial vehicles, and general mechanical and equipment maintenance. Metabo offers 300 Nm and 800 Nm versions, and HiKOKI has 18V and 36V models.
  • 3/4″ drive — for trucks, buses and heavier equipment, where a 1/2″ wrench runs out of torque. Metabo's 3/4″ wrenches are rated at 1750 Nm, and HiKOKI offers the 36V WR36DA and WR36DF.

Check the torque rating in the specifications for each model, because it varies within the same drive size. For 1″ drive or sustained high-volume bolting, see our air impact wrenches.

Using a Cordless Impact Wrench Safely

  • Use impact-rated sockets only — standard chrome sockets are not made for impact loads and can fracture. See impact sockets & bits.
  • Wear eye and hearing protection.
  • Finish critical joints with a torque wrench — an impact wrench is not a torque-controlled tool, so run the fastener down and set the final torque with a torque wrench where a torque is specified.

Our Cordless Impact Wrench Brands

People Also Ask — Cordless Impact Wrenches

Q: Is a cordless impact wrench as powerful as an air impact wrench?

For most 1/2″ and 3/4″ jobs a modern brushless cordless wrench has the torque to do the work, and Metabo's 3/4″ wrenches are rated at 1750 Nm. For 1″ drive or sustained high-volume bolting, an air impact wrench on a good compressor is still the usual choice. Check the torque rating of the model against the job.

Q: What does skin only mean?

Skin only means the tool is sold on its own, without a battery or charger. If you already have batteries for that brand, a skin only tool is the cheapest way in. Otherwise choose a kit, and check what it includes.

Q: Can I use Metabo batteries on a HiKOKI wrench, or the other way round?

No. Each brand uses its own battery system, so batteries and chargers are not interchangeable between Metabo and HiKOKI. Choose the brand that matches the batteries you already own, or buy a kit.

Q: What drive size cordless impact wrench do I need for truck wheels versus a car?

A 1/2″ drive wrench suits cars and light commercial vehicles. A 3/4″ drive wrench is the usual step up for trucks, buses and heavier equipment. Check the torque rating of the model against the fastener.

Q: Do I need special sockets for a cordless impact wrench?

Yes. Use impact-rated sockets. Standard chrome sockets are not made for impact loads and can crack or shatter.

Q: Can I use a cordless impact wrench to tighten to a specified torque?

Not on its own. An impact wrench is not torque-controlled. Run the fastener down with the impact wrench, then set the final torque with a torque wrench where a torque is specified.
