Annular Cutters & Sets

Annular cutters (core cutters or Broach cutters) produce clean, full-size holes in steel plate and structural sections in a single pass — without a pilot hole and without the material removal waste of a twist drill. AIMS Industrial stocks annular cutters in HSS and cobalt grades, in individual sizes and sets, for magnetic drill presses and drill press use.

How Annular Cutters Work

Unlike a twist drill, which removes all the material from the hole as swarf, an annular cutter removes only the annular (ring-shaped) outer zone and ejects the central slug intact. This dramatically reduces cutting forces, machine load and cutting time for large diameter holes — a 35mm annular cutter cuts faster and with less effort than a 35mm twist drill, and leaves a cleaner hole that typically requires no deburring.

Sizes and Grades

Annular cutters are available from 12mm to 100mm+ diameter, with cutting depths of 25mm, 50mm and 75mm to suit plate thickness requirements. HSS grades are suitable for mild steel and structural sections. Cobalt (M35 or M42) grades are recommended for harder steels, stainless steel and harder alloys. Weldon shank (19.05mm) is the standard fitting for magnetic drill presses and is directly compatible with Broach cutter arbors.

Magnetic Drill Press Compatibility

Annular cutters are the primary tooling for magnetic (mag) drill presses — the tool of choice for on-site structural steel work where a floor-standing drill press cannot be used. The magnetic base clamps to the steel workpiece and the cutter produces accurate, clean holes for bolt connections, pipe penetrations and fabrication joints.
