Brad Point vs Twist Drill for Timber

A standard twist drill used in timber tends to wander off-centre on entry, tears the grain around the hole perimeter and produces a rough-edged hole — particularly on exit. A brad point bit solves all three problems. The centre spur locates the bit precisely at the marked point before the outer spurs score the hole perimeter cleanly, and the cutting lips pare the timber fibres to produce a flat-bottomed, clean-edged hole. The result is a hole that requires no sanding or touch-up for visible joinery and hardware installation work.

Applications

Brad point bits are used for drilling dowel holes in furniture joinery, pilot holes for shelf pins and cabinet hardware, hinge and bolt cup holes in flatpack and custom furniture, cable and pipe penetration holes in joinery and cabinetry, and all timber boring work where hole quality matters. They are not suited to metal or masonry — they are a timber-specific tool.
