Brake Motors

Buy Brake Motors Online in Australia

Brake motors integrate an electromagnetic disc brake into the rear bearing housing for fast, controlled stopping under load. Used on overhead cranes, jib cranes, electric hoists, goods lifts, conveyor drives, packaging machinery, and any application where load runaway, precise position holding, or rapid stop is a safety or operational requirement. AIMS stocks TechTop 415V three-phase aluminium brake motors across the kW range, in foot mount (B3) and combined foot-and-flange configurations.

When You Need a Brake Motor

A brake motor is the right call when:

  • Loads hold position when power is interrupted — lifts, hoists, jib cranes, vertical conveyors. A standard motor will coast or freewheel; a brake motor stops and holds.
  • Stop time is safety-critical — packaging guillotines, indexing tables, robotic axes. Brake engages on power-off in milliseconds.
  • Repetitive precise positioning — bottling line indexers, label feeds, pick-and-place. The brake stops the rotor at the same point each cycle.
  • Emergency stop integration — when an E-stop is pressed, the brake engages automatically with the contactor drop-out.

For applications where free coasting is acceptable (fans, pumps, mixers), a standard three-phase motor without integrated brake is more cost-effective.

TechTop TAI-BHR Brake Motor Series

The TechTop TAI-BHR series is a 415V three-phase aluminium-frame brake motor with integrated electromagnetic disc brake. The brake is spring-applied (fail-safe — engages on power loss) and electrically released (energising the brake coil disengages the brake to allow motor rotation). Rectifier and terminal box are integrated into the motor housing.

Range Mount Typical Application
0.18 — 22 kW (B3 foot) Foot mount Conveyors, mixers, packaging machinery
0.18 — 22 kW (B3/B5 foot & flange) Combined Direct gearbox coupling, lift drives
0.18 — 22 kW (B3/B14 foot & flange) Combined Hoists, jib cranes, indexing tables
0.18 — 22 kW (B5 / B14 flange only) Flange Direct gearbox / chain drive integration

Applications

  • Overhead & jib cranes — hoist drive, slew drive, long-travel drive — see Lifting Equipment and Jib Crane Guide
  • Electric hoists — wire rope hoist, chain hoist primary drive — see Electric Hoist Guide
  • Conveyor drives — incline conveyors, vertical lift conveyors, indexing conveyors
  • Packaging machinery — guillotine drives, label-feed indexers, pick-and-place axes
  • Lift drives — goods lifts, dumb-waiters, scissor-lift platforms
  • Roller-shutter doors and gate operators — controlled stop at limit positions

Brand Stocked

  • TechTop — TAI-BHR series. Three-phase, 415V, aluminium-frame brake motor with integrated electromagnetic disc brake. IE2/IE3 efficiency-compliant. Mounted DIN 56 terminal box with rectifier integrated.

Standards & Compliance

TechTop brake motors are manufactured to AS/NZS 60034 [VERIFY: current edition year] for rotating electrical machines (Part 1 rating & performance; Part 5 IP degree of protection; Part 30 IE2/IE3 efficiency classification). Brake performance specifications follow AS/NZS 1359 [VERIFY:] for energy-efficient motors and IEC 60034-22 [VERIFY:] for terminal box safety. Insulation class F as standard.

Mounting and Selection

Brake-motor selection depends on the application's required braking torque (typically 1.5-2.0× motor torque for hoisting applications), duty cycle (S1 continuous vs S3 intermittent), and mounting (B3 foot, B5 flange, B14 flange, or combinations). The integrated brake is sized to motor frame as standard; for higher braking torque, external brake calipers can be specified.
