Files & Chisels

Files and chisels are fundamental hand cutting tools for metalworking — removing material, dressing surfaces, and creating or modifying features by hand. Hand Files

Files remove material by pushing hardened, precisely formed teeth across the workpiece surface. The cut is determined by tooth profile, tooth density, and tooth cut angle:

• Profiles: Flat, half-round, round (rat-tail), triangular (three-square), square, and knife files each suit different workpiece geometries. Half-round files are the most versatile general-purpose file — the flat side handles flat and convex surfaces; the curved side accesses concave features and radiused recesses.
• Grades: Bastard (coarse) for rapid material removal; second cut (medium) for general work; smooth for finishing. Double-cut files remove material faster; single-cut files produce a finer finish.

Needle Files and Rifflers

Needle files are small-diameter precision files for detail work — fitting keyways, cleaning up slots, and accessing tight spaces. They are sold in sets covering the most common profiles and are essential in tool and die making, instrument maintenance, and precision fitting work. Always use a handle on needle files — without a handle, the fine wire tang will damage the hand under the pressure of normal filing.

Cold Chisels

Cold chisels cut or shear metal when struck with a hammer. The flat chisel is the most common form — used to cut through bolts, cut sheet metal, remove rivet heads, and break welds. Cape (cross-cut) chisels cut narrow grooves; diamond-point chisels are used for clean corners. Cold chisels must be struck with a hammer heavy enough to do the work cleanly — an undersized hammer results in fatigue and inaccuracy.
