Fuse + Accessory Selection — Quick Reference

Fuses PROTECT electrical circuits + equipment from OVERLOAD + SHORT CIRCUIT damage. Fault current melts fuse element + breaks circuit before downstream damage. Match fuse RATING + TYPE to circuit + equipment.

Fuse Type Best For
HRC (High Rupturing Capacity) Industrial main circuits
Cartridge Fuse (Ceramic) Equipment + machinery
Glass Tube Fuse Electronics + auxiliary
Blade Fuse (Automotive) Vehicle electrical + low-voltage
Mini / Micro Blade Modern automotive compact
Slow-Blow vs Fast-Blow Inductive load vs sensitive electronics
Fuse Holders + Boxes Mounting + accessibility
Fuse Pullers Safe removal of hot fuses

Critical: NEVER replace blown fuse with higher rating — fuse rating MATCHES circuit + cable + equipment design. Replacing oversize = no protection + fire risk. Investigate WHY fuse blew before replacing. AS/NZS 3000 compliance. Companion: electrical + electronic, terminals, automotive tools.

Fuses & Accessories

Fuses protect electrical circuits and equipment from the damage caused by overload and short circuit conditions. When fault current exceeds the fuse rating, the fuse element melts — interrupting the circuit and preventing the fault current from damaging the wiring, equipment, or creating a fire hazard. The fuse is a sacrificial protection device: it does its job once and must be replaced after operation. AIMS Industrial supplies cartridge fuses, HRC fuses, fuse holders, and accessories for industrial control panel and electrical maintenance applications.

Cartridge Fuse Types

  • Glass cartridge fuses: Transparent body allows visual inspection of the element — a blown fuse is immediately visible. Used in low-voltage control circuits, electronics, and automotive applications. Available in 5×20mm and 6.3×32mm sizes for most control circuit applications.
  • Ceramic cartridge fuses: Opaque ceramic body with higher breaking capacity and better arc suppression than glass. Standard for industrial control panels and power circuits. The ceramic body contains the arc energy when the fuse clears a high fault current — a glass fuse in this role would shatter or fail to interrupt safely.
  • HRC (High Rupturing Capacity) fuses: Filled with silica sand that quenches the arc instantly when the element melts, allowing the fuse to safely interrupt very high fault currents. Required for motor starters, main switchboard protection, and circuits near the supply where prospective fault current is high. NH-type (DIN) and BS88 types cover the most common Australian industrial applications.

Fuse Holders and Accessories

Panel-mount fuse holders, DIN rail fuse blocks, and fuse terminal blocks provide neat, organized circuit protection in panel assemblies. Fuse holders must be rated for the same voltage and current as the fuse — an undersized holder creates a fault risk at the contact point. DIN rail fuse blocks with blown-fuse indication (a LED or flag indicator that shows when a fuse has operated) significantly reduce fault diagnosis time in multi-circuit panels.

Critical Replacement Rules

Always replace a blown fuse with one of the correct type, rating, and breaking capacity. Fitting a higher-rated fuse than specified defeats the circuit protection entirely. Never bridge a blown fuse with wire or other conductive material — this is an extremely dangerous practice that removes all overload and short circuit protection from the circuit. Keep a range of spare fuses on hand to minimise downtime when faults occur. Fuse holders and carriers are available in DIN-rail, panel-mount, and inline configurations to suit switchboards, control panels, and equipment enclosures of all types.
