Electrical Terminals and Crimp Lugs for Australian Electrical and Trade Work

Electrical terminals (also called crimp lugs or connectors) are the components that terminate electrical cable conductors for connection to equipment, terminals, or other cables. The crimped connection between cable and terminal is the everyday standard for permanent electrical connections — significantly more reliable than soldered or screw-clamped connections in vibration and over time. For Australian electricians, automotive technicians, and trade workers terminating electrical cable, the right terminal matched to cable size, application, and connection method is essential. AIMS Industrial supplies electrical terminals across the standard formats Australian customers actually use.

The terminal types we stock

  • Insulated terminals (red, blue, yellow) — colour-coded by cable size; pre-insulated for general electrical use
  • Uninsulated terminals — bare metal terminals for use in custom-insulated installations
  • Ring terminals — closed loop for stud-and-nut connections; the everyday choice for terminal block connection
  • Spade terminals — open fork for fast slide-on connection to terminal posts
  • Bullet connectors — male/female pairs for inline cable joining
  • Quick-disconnect terminals — slide-fit terminals for fast assembly and disconnection
  • Wire ferrules (cable end sleeves) — insulated metal sleeves crimped onto cable ends for terminal block insertion
  • Battery terminals and lugs — heavier-duty terminals for vehicle and industrial battery connections
  • Heat shrink terminals — terminals with heat-shrink boots for water-resistant connections

Insulated terminal colour coding

Industry-standard insulated terminal colour coding by cable size:

  • Red — for cable 0.5mm² to 1.5mm² (small cable, control wiring)
  • Blue — for cable 1.5mm² to 2.5mm² (medium cable, general electrical)
  • Yellow — for cable 4mm² to 6mm² (heavier cable, power circuits)
  • White or larger sizes — for cable above 6mm² (industrial and high-current applications)

The colour code is universal across manufacturers — match terminal colour to cable size for proper crimp engagement.

Where each terminal type earns its place

  • Ring terminals — terminal blocks, distribution boards, motor terminals, battery posts
  • Spade terminals — fast assembly on dishwasher and appliance terminal posts; light electrical work
  • Quick-disconnect terminals — vehicle wiring, automotive accessories, control panels
  • Wire ferrules — terminal block screw-clamp connections in industrial control panels
  • Battery terminals — vehicle battery cables, industrial battery banks, off-grid power systems
  • Heat shrink terminals — marine, outdoor, and water-exposure applications

Crimping practice

Quality crimps require the right tool for the terminal type. Insulated terminals need ratcheting crimping pliers with the matching die set; uninsulated terminals need different jaws. Wire ferrules need ferrule-specific crimping pliers (typically four-indent or hexagonal jaw). Strip the cable to the terminal's barrel length, insert fully into the terminal, crimp with the matching tool. The crimp should compress the barrel onto the cable strands without crushing through the insulation. Pull-test the connection to verify mechanical retention.

Tools you'll need

For different terminal types: ratcheting crimping pliers for insulated terminals, dedicated ferrule crimpers for ferrules, hydraulic or mechanical lug crimpers for larger cable terminations. See our specialty pliers range for matching crimping tools.
