High Pressure Fittings for Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems

High pressure fittings are critical components in hydraulic, pneumatic, and process piping systems, providing reliable sealed connections between hoses, tubes, pipes, and system components at elevated operating pressures. Selecting fittings that are correctly rated for the system pressure, compatible with the fluid being handled, and matched to the thread standard used in the system is essential for safe, leak-free operation. AIMS stocks a comprehensive range of high pressure fittings from leading hydraulic and fluid power brands in common thread forms and pressure ratings.

Thread Standards and Compatibility

High pressure fittings are available in several thread standards that are not directly interchangeable. BSP (British Standard Pipe) in both parallel (BSPP, G thread) and tapered (BSPT) forms are the most common in Australian hydraulic and pneumatic systems. NPT (National Pipe Thread) tapered fittings are frequently encountered on imported American equipment. JIC (Joint Industry Council) 37-degree flare fittings are widely used in high-pressure hydraulic lines due to their reliable metal-to-metal seal. Metric compression fittings (DIN 2353) are specified on European hydraulic equipment. Always verify the thread form on both the fitting and the mating port before connecting — mismatched threads result in leaks and can damage sealing surfaces.

Pressure Ratings and Material Selection

High pressure fittings are pressure-rated based on their material, wall thickness, and connection type. Carbon steel fittings are standard for most industrial hydraulic applications and are compatible with mineral hydraulic oils, water-glycol fluids, and petroleum-based fluids. Stainless steel fittings are specified for corrosive fluids, food-grade applications, and offshore environments. Brass fittings are suitable for lower pressure pneumatic systems and certain fluid media but should not be used in high-pressure hydraulic circuits. Always verify the fitting's maximum working pressure rating against the system's maximum operating pressure, including pressure spikes.

Sealing Methods

Different high pressure fitting types rely on different sealing mechanisms. BSPT and NPT tapered threads seal on the thread form itself, typically with the addition of PTFE tape or anaerobic thread sealant. BSPP parallel threads use a bonded seal (Dowty washer) or O-ring face seal. JIC fittings rely on metal-to-metal contact on the 37-degree cone seat. O-ring face seal (ORFS) fittings provide the most reliable leak-free connection for high-vibration applications and are increasingly specified in new hydraulic system designs.
