Choosing a lifting magnet

Start with the load. The rated capacity applies to a clean, flat, thick steel surface with full contact, and it drops on thin, curved, rough, painted or hot material, so choose a magnet with a good margin over the load. Check how the magnet is operated, whether it is a manual or cordless electric model, and whether you need a single magnet or a multi-magnet set for long plate. Lifting magnets are lifting equipment, so use them within the rated working load, and have them inspected and tested as your site procedures and the manufacturer require.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the rated capacity, material thickness and operating conditions before use.

Lifting magnet FAQs

How does a magnetic lifter work?

A permanent magnetic lifter holds steel through magnetic attraction, so you can lift plate or round stock without slings. It is switched on and off by a handle or lever, and the rated lifting capacity depends on the thickness and surface condition of the steel.

What capacities do you list?

Permanent magnetic lifters from 100 kg and 300 kg up, Beaver lifters from 100 kg to 1000 kg, and Magswitch Extenda-Lift lifters listed at 600 lb and 1000 lb breakaway. Check each product for its rated capacity.

Does material thickness affect the rated load?

Yes. Rated capacities assume a clean, flat, thick steel surface. Thin, curved, rough or painted material reduces the holding force, so allow a margin.

What is a Magswitch hand lifter?

A Magswitch hand lifter is a handheld magnetic lifter. We list a manual model (60-M) and a cordless electric model (60-CE with holster), plus fixed single and dual hand lifters.

Do you have a lifter for long plate?

Magswitch MLAY600 and MLAY1000 are listed in multi-magnet versions (x2, x3 and x4) for longer loads. Check the data sheet for load ratings.

Do lifting magnets need inspection?

Lifting equipment should be inspected and tested as the manufacturer and your site procedures require. Contact us if you need help with data sheets.
