Needle Roller Inner Rings
A needle roller inner ring (IR series) is a precision-ground, through-hardened sleeve that fits onto a non-hardened shaft to provide the bearing-quality running surface that needle bearings require. They're sold separately from the bearing because many needle bearings are designed to run directly on hardened shafts, but in the field — and especially in retrofit and repair work — the shaft is rarely hardened to bearing quality. The IR ring is the fix. AIMS Industrial stocks the inner ring range for retrofit, OEM, and replacement applications.
How an IR ring fits the system
- The shaft is turned to standard tolerance (h6 or similar)
- The IR ring is press-fitted onto the shaft
- The needle bearing assembly fits over the outside of the IR ring
- The needles run on the hardened ground OD of the IR ring rather than the soft shaft
The IR ring acts as the inner race that the bearing's needles need but doesn't carry on the OE bearing — common in automotive and small machine tool design where shaft hardening adds cost.
Sizing and matching
IR ring designations (IR15x20x16, for example) describe the bore × outside diameter × width in millimetres. The OD must match the bore of the needle bearing it's being used with; the bore must match the shaft diameter (with appropriate press-fit allowance); the width must match the needle bearing's effective race length. Bearing manufacturer catalogues list the matching IR ring for each non-inner-ring needle bearing — that's the right starting point for selection.
Where IR rings earn their place
- Retrofit and repair — replacing a worn shaft section with a fresh IR ring is faster and cheaper than re-hardening the shaft
- Cost-driven OEM design — softer steel shafts with IR rings often cost less than hardened-and-ground shafts
- Service life extension — replacing a worn IR ring is a much smaller job than replacing the shaft
- Field repair — IR rings can be replaced without removing the shaft entirely in some assemblies
Brands stocked at AIMS
The IR ring range draws from NSK, NTN, Koyo, IKO, and FYH — the same manufacturers that supply our needle bearing range, so matching dimensions and tolerances are straightforward. We can cross-reference by IR designation or by the parent needle bearing's part number.
Installation
IR rings are press fits, not slip fits. Use a press, an arbor, or a specialist IR-ring fitting tool — never hammer directly on the ring face, which deforms the running surface. Heat the ring or chill the shaft if the press fit is tight; the bore should slide on smoothly with even pressure once the temperature differential is right.
