Ratchet Straps & Tie-Down Straps — Load Restraint for Australian Trade and Transport

Ratchet straps and tie-down straps secure loads on trucks, trailers, utes and during transport — keeping cargo where it's meant to be under acceleration, braking and cornering. Australian load restraint regulations (NTC Load Restraint Guide, Australian Road Rules) require loads secured to specific standards. AIMS Industrial stocks 45+ ratchet straps and tie-downs in the widths, lengths and capacities Australian transport, civil, mining and trade users need. For a full guide to selection, capacity ratings and inspection, see our Ratchet Strap Guide.

Ratchet Strap Sizing — Quick Reference

  • 25mm (1") webbing — light-duty, Lashing Capacity (LC) ~750kg. For tarps, light loads on utes and small trailers.
  • 35mm (1-3/8") webbing — medium-duty, LC 1,500–2,000kg. The most common ute/trailer strap size.
  • 50mm (2") webbing — heavy-duty, LC 2,500–3,000kg. The workhorse for truck and trailer load restraint.
  • 75mm (3") webbing — extra heavy-duty, LC 5,000kg+. For industrial, oversize and machinery transport.

Lashing Capacity (LC) is the working rating, not the breaking strength. Don't operate at or beyond LC — use multiple straps to spread load and provide redundancy. Capacity tags must remain attached and legible (legal requirement under NTC Load Restraint Guide).

Strap Types We Stock

  • Ratchet straps — webbing strap with ratchet tensioning mechanism. The standard for serious load restraint where high tension is required to hold cargo against vehicle motion. Available across all webbing widths from 25mm to 75mm.
  • Cam-buckle straps — quick-tighten cam buckle for lighter loads where ratchet leverage isn't needed. Faster to apply but lower achievable tension than a ratchet.
  • Endless straps and slings — closed-loop construction for specific tie-down configurations and over-the-load lashing.
  • Replacement webbing and components — replacement straps and components for keeping working ratchets in service.
  • Hooks, end fittings and corner protectors — S-hooks, snap hooks, J-hooks, twist hooks for varied tie-down points; corner protectors to shield webbing from sharp edges on cargo and trailer rails.

Australian Load Restraint Compliance

Load restraint on Australian roads is governed by the NTC Load Restraint Guide and the Australian Road Rules. The guide specifies forward, sideways and rearward restraint requirements based on load weight, configuration and vehicle type. Key compliance points:

  • Capacity tags — every strap must have a legible tag showing Lashing Capacity (LC), Ultimate Breaking Strength (UBS) and standards compliance. Strap with no tag = not compliant.
  • Strap condition — webbing free from cuts, frays, abrasion, UV degradation, chemical contamination, stitching damage. Hooks and ratchets must work freely without rust, deformation or worn latches.
  • Restraint geometry — straps angled and positioned to meet forward (0.8g), sideways (0.5g) and rearward (0.5g) restraint requirements. The Guide includes worked examples.
  • Document the approach — for commercial transport, keep records of the restraint method, strap inspection and replacement intervals.

What to Inspect on a Ratchet Strap

  • Webbing — cuts, fraying, abrasion damage, UV degradation, chemical contamination. Any of these = replace.
  • Stitching — broken or missing stitches mean the load-bearing seams are compromised. Replace.
  • Hooks and end fittings — cracks, deformation, worn latches on safety hooks. Replace.
  • Ratchet mechanism — must engage and release cleanly. Rust, grit or worn pawls cause sudden releases under load. Replace or service.
  • Capacity tag — must be present and legible. No tag = strap is not legally compliant for road transport.

Brands & Range Stocked at AIMS

SmartStraps covers the trade-grade ratchet strap range with strong product depth and clear capacity ratings. AIMS also stocks complementary brands across heavy-duty, light-duty and specialty applications. All straps supplied with capacity tags showing LC, UBS and standards compliance.

Storage and Care

Store straps coiled and dry, away from direct sunlight (UV degrades webbing rapidly). Don't leave straps under load when not in use — sustained tension over months changes the webbing's tensile properties. Wash dirty straps with mild soap and water; don't use solvents or aggressive cleaners that degrade the synthetic webbing.

Companion Ranges at AIMS
