Ratchet + Socket Range — Quick Reference

AIMS stocks 570+ ratchets + sockets — complete socket sets are foundation of any professional tool kit. Selection by DRIVE SIZE (1/4" / 3/8" / 1/2" / 3/4" / 1") + SYSTEM (metric / imperial / Whitworth) + APPLICATION (general + impact + production).

Drive Size Best For Typical Torque
1/4" Drive Small fasteners + electronics + light assembly 5-30 Nm typical
3/8" Drive General workshop + automotive — workshop default 20-100 Nm typical
1/2" Drive Heavier fastening + automotive + structural 50-300 Nm typical
3/4" Drive Heavy truck + plant + structural 200-1,500 Nm typical
1" Drive Heaviest industrial — mining + heavy plant 500-3,000+ Nm typical
Standard Sockets (6-Point / 12-Point) 6-pt = max grip; 12-pt = engages at 30° intervals Per drive
Deep Sockets Reach over studs + nuts on long bolts Per drive
Impact Sockets (Black) Impact wrench use — hardened + thicker walls Per drive
Universal Joints (Wobble + Flex) Angle access to fasteners Per drive
Extensions (50/100/150mm) Deep recess + restricted access Per drive
Hex Bit Sockets (Allen) Internal hex SHCS driving with ratchet Per drive
Torx Bit Sockets Torx fasteners with ratchet drive Per drive

Critical: NEVER use standard (chrome) sockets on impact wrench — they SHATTER under impact (HSS + thinner walls). Use impact-rated (black phosphate) sockets. Match drive size to fastener torque — undersized = stripped drive square; oversized = no socket fits small fasteners. Brands: Ko-ken, Stahlwille, Bahco, Trax, Draper. Companion: sockets + accessories, socket bit sets, hand tools.

Build Your Socket Collection from Australia's Most Comprehensive Ratchets and Sockets Range

A complete socket set is the foundation of any professional tool kit. AIMS Industrial stocks over 570 ratchets and sockets covering metric, imperial and Whitworth thread standards, in 1/4”, 3/8”, 1/2” and 3/4” drive sizes — from individual replacement sockets to complete socket sets for trade, maintenance and engineering workshops across Australia.

We stock sockets and ratchets from Ko-Ken, Stahlwille & Trax — trusted hand tool brands covering precision-engineered professional sockets through to trade-grade sets.

The Ratchets & Sockets Range

Our range is the most comprehensive socket offering at AIMS Industrial, covering individual sockets, sets and drive accessories across all major thread standards.

  • Ko-Ken Sockets: Ko-Ken is the largest brand in the range with over 150 individual sockets. The Ko-Ken range covers 3/8” drive metric sockets in both 6-point (3400M series) and 12-point configurations, 3/4” drive 12-point metric sockets and a full range of extension bars. Ko-Ken sockets are precision-manufactured in Japan and are the preferred choice for professional mechanics, engineers and maintenance technicians who require dimensional accuracy and long service life.
  • Stahlwille Sockets & Sets: Stahlwille Inhex (hex key / Allen) sockets for 1/4” drive metric applications are a core part of the Stahlwille offering, alongside standard hex sockets in multiple drive sizes. Stahlwille is a premium German tool brand recognised for manufacturing tolerance and durability in demanding industrial and automotive applications. See the complete Stahlwille range for a broader selection of professional hand tools.
  • Trax Socket Sets: Trax socket sets include the BSW-12008K 1/2” Drive Whitworth Socket Set (8-piece) and individual 3/8” 12-point Whitworth sockets. Whitworth sockets are essential for maintaining older British-standard machinery, plant and vehicles still in service in Australian mining, agriculture and maintenance environments. The Trax range also covers a wide selection of pneumatic and air tool accessories.

Choosing the Right Sockets for Your Work

Getting the right socket comes down to drive size, thread standard and the specific application.

  • Drive Size: 1/4” drive suits light torque and tight access applications. 3/8” drive is the most versatile all-purpose choice for trade and maintenance use. 1/2” drive handles heavier torque for larger fasteners. 3/4” drive is suited to large industrial bolting. Match drive size to the torque requirement of the fastener.
  • Thread Standard: Metric sockets are required for metric fasteners used on most modern machinery and vehicles. Whitworth sockets are required for British Standard Whitworth (BSW) fasteners still found on older equipment. Do not use a metric socket on a Whitworth fastener — the size difference risks rounding the fastener head.
