Choosing the Right Rivet Nut

Rivet nut selection depends on the host material, the thread size required, access conditions and the service environment.

• Material: Aluminium rivet nuts are used in aluminium and thin steel sheet where reduced weight and galvanic compatibility are priorities. Steel (zinc plated) rivet nuts are the standard choice for most steel fabrication applications. Stainless steel rivet nuts (Inox World) are specified for corrosive or food-grade environments.
• Standard vs Large Flange: Large flange rivet nuts have a wider bearing flange that distributes the installation load over a larger area — important in thin or soft materials (aluminium, plastics, composite panels) where a standard flange can pull through or deform the host material under load.
• Installation Tooling: Rivet nuts require a dedicated rivet nut tool (hand or pneumatic) to install correctly. The mandrel threads into the rivet nut, and pulling the tool expands and deforms the rivet nut body against the reverse face of the host material, locking it in place. Using the correct tool ensures consistent installation and prevents damage to the rivet nut or host material.
