Roll Grooving Attachments for Australian Pipework Installation

Roll grooving attachments are the tools that produce circumferential grooves at the ends of steel pipe — the essential prep step for installing roll groove couplings and fittings (Victaulic-style systems) used in fire sprinkler, HVAC, and industrial pipework. AIMS Industrial supplies roll grooving attachments and grooving tools for trade plumbers, mechanical services contractors, and pipework fabricators.

The grooving tool types we stock

  • Roll groove attachments for pipe threading machines — bolt-on attachments that convert a power pipe threader into a grooving tool
  • Standalone roll grooving machines — purpose-built grooving machines for production work
  • Hand-operated roll groovers — for site work where a powered machine isn't practical
  • Cut groove tools — for thicker-wall pipe (schedule 80 and above) where cut grooving is required
  • Replacement rolls and dies — wear parts to keep grooving tools in service

Roll grooving versus cut grooving

  • Roll grooving — deforms the pipe wall outward and inward to form the groove without material removal. Suits standard schedule 40 and lighter pipe.
  • Cut grooving — removes a circumferential band of pipe wall to form the groove. Required on schedule 80 and heavier pipe where roll grooving cannot achieve a properly-formed groove without distorting the bore.

The choice is determined by the pipe wall thickness, not preference. Check the pipe specification before committing to a tool type. Most workshops doing standard plumbing and HVAC work need only roll grooving capacity; specialist fabricators handling thicker industrial pipe need both.

Sizing — match to pipe range

Grooving tools are rated by the maximum pipe size they can groove. For most plumbing and HVAC trade work, capacity to 6 inch covers the standard range. For commercial fire sprinkler and larger HVAC pipework, 8 inch and 12 inch capacity becomes essential. For industrial mains and large-diameter pipework, dedicated large-capacity grooving machines are required.

Where roll grooving earns its place

  • Fire sprinkler installation — the dominant pipework method for AS 2118 sprinkler systems
  • HVAC pipework — chilled water, hot water, and condenser water systems
  • Industrial water supply — process water and utility water main installation
  • Pipework fabrication — pre-grooving pipe sections in the workshop for site assembly

Operating practice and consumables

Roll grooving requires the right groove dimensions for the matching coupling — depth, width, and shoulder profile must match the coupling specification. Rolls and dies wear with use; replacement parts are stocked alongside the tools so grooving can stay in service. For production grooving, a periodic check of groove dimensions against a gauge prevents under-spec grooves that won't seal properly.
