Roll grooving versus cut grooving

• Roll grooving — deforms the pipe wall outward and inward to form the groove without material removal. Suits standard schedule 40 and lighter pipe.
• Cut grooving — removes a circumferential band of pipe wall to form the groove. Required on schedule 80 and heavier pipe where roll grooving cannot achieve a properly-formed groove without distorting the bore.

The choice is determined by the pipe wall thickness, not preference. Check the pipe specification before committing to a tool type. Most workshops doing standard plumbing and HVAC work need only roll grooving capacity; specialist fabricators handling thicker industrial pipe need both.

Sizing — match to pipe range

Grooving tools are rated by the maximum pipe size they can groove. For most plumbing and HVAC trade work, capacity to 6 inch covers the standard range. For commercial fire sprinkler and larger HVAC pipework, 8 inch and 12 inch capacity becomes essential. For industrial mains and large-diameter pipework, dedicated large-capacity grooving machines are required.

For production grooving, a periodic check of groove dimensions against a gauge prevents under-spec grooves that won't seal properly.
