Choosing a wood bit

Match the bit to the hole. A brad point bit has a centre point that locates the hole, which helps start accurately in timber. Larger holes are usually bored with a self-feeding or four flute cutter, which pulls itself into the timber, so use a drill with enough power and torque for the size and hold it firmly. Check the shank against your drill. For deep holes see Auger Drill Bits. Always check the data sheet.

Wood Bit FAQs

What is the difference between a brad point and a self-feeding bit?

A brad point bit has a centre point that locates it, so it starts accurately and suits smaller holes. A self-feeding bit has a feed screw that pulls the bit into the timber and suits larger holes bored quickly. Quad Max four flute cutters are another option for larger holes.

What size holes can I drill?

The Quad Max sets run from 16 to 32 mm and the Bordo 9 piece self-feeding set from 25 to 57 mm. The single bits are listed in several sizes, so check the variant lists.

What do I need to drill with?

Use a drill with enough torque for the bit size, hold it firmly and keep the speed suited to the size of the bit. Check the shank type before you buy.
