Choosing abrasives

Start with the job: cutting, grinding, blending, sanding, deburring, cleaning or polishing. Then check the material, because many products are listed for steel, stainless steel, aluminium, timber or other materials, and the product page shows what each one is supplied for. Next, match the size and fitting to your tool: diameter, thickness, bore or shank, and whether it fits a grinder, sander, die grinder or bench grinder. For discs, belts and sheets, a coarser grit removes material faster and a finer grit leaves a smoother finish, so work through the grits in order. Check the maximum speed marked on a wheel or disc against your tool, and always wear the right eye, hearing and breathing protection. Our guides cover the main decisions: cutting discs, grinding discs and wheels, flap discs, sanding discs, sandpaper grit, belt sanders, carbide burrs, wire brushes and wire wheels, angle grinders, bench grinders and die grinders. Also see grinding wheel safety. Always check the product page for the specification and application before you order.

Abrasives FAQs

What abrasives does AIMS Industrial list?

What is the difference between a cutting disc and a grinding disc?

They are made for different jobs. A cutting disc is listed for cutting and a grinding disc for grinding, so use each one only for what its product page says. Our cutting disc guide and grinding disc guide explain the differences.

How do I choose the right grit?

A coarser grit removes material faster and a finer grit leaves a smoother finish. Work through the grits in order rather than skipping steps. Our sandpaper grit guide and sanding disc guide cover the choices.

How do I check an abrasive fits my tool?

Check the diameter, thickness and bore, or the shank size, in the product title against your tool, and check the maximum speed marked on the product against your tool. Call us on (02) 9773 0122 if you want help matching one.

Do you list abrasives for stainless steel?

Many products are listed for stainless steel or Inox in the title. Check the product page for what each one is supplied for, or call us on (02) 9773 0122 and we'll help you find one.

Can I get a quote for a larger order?

Yes. Request a quote or call us on (02) 9773 0122 with the products and quantities you need and we'll check what we can supply.
