Choosing a burr set

First check the shank: 6 mm and 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) are close but not interchangeable, so match your tool's collet. Then choose the cut for the material. Aluminium and non-ferrous cuts are made for soft metals that clog a standard cut, Inox cuts are for stainless steel, and general purpose double cut suits mixed steel work. Pick the set that holds the shapes you use, such as cylinder, ball, tree and cone. Do not run a burr faster than its rated speed, and wear eye protection. Always check the data sheet.

Burr Set FAQs

Should I choose a 6 mm or a 1/4 inch shank?

Choose the shank that fits your tool's collet. 6 mm and 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) are very close in size, but a collet is made for one or the other, so check before you buy.

What does an Inox or aluminium cut mean?

It is the tooth pattern. An Inox cut is made for stainless steel and an aluminium or non-ferrous cut is made for soft metals that would clog a standard cut. General purpose double cut is for everyday steel work.

Which tool do I run a burr in?

Burrs run in die grinders and other rotary tools with a matching collet. Never exceed the burr's maximum speed, and check the rating on the data sheet.
