Choosing PPE and safety equipment

Start with the hazard: impact, cuts, chemicals, heat, noise, dust, falls or moving plant. PPE is the last line of defence, so use it with the other controls on your job, and let your safe work method statement and site requirements decide what is needed. Then match the product to the task. A glove for general handling is not the same as one for cuts, chemicals or heat, and a safety spectacle is not the same as a goggle. Check the product page and the data sheet for what each item is supplied for and the standard marked on it. Fit matters, so check the size for boots, gloves and harnesses, and follow the maker's instructions for harnesses and lanyards. Our guides cover the main decisions: safety glasses, work gloves, safety boots, safety harnesses, lockout tagout, respirators and dust masks, hearing protection, welding helmets, convex safety mirrors and welding safety. Always check the product page for the specification and application before you order.
