Choosing respiratory protection

Disposable P2 respirators

A P2 respirator filters fine dust and particles, and suits most workshop and site dust. A valve makes exhaling easier and helps in hot conditions, so choose a valved respirator for long wear. Disposable respirators are for single-shift use, so replace one when it is damaged, wet, dirty or hard to breathe through.

PAPR

A PAPR uses a battery-powered blower to draw air through a filter and supply it to the face piece. It is more comfortable than a disposable mask over a long shift, and the Tecmen helmets and face shields give eye and face protection at the same time. The P3 particle filter does not remove gases or vapours.

Fume extraction

Fume extraction removes welding fume before you breathe it, and is usually the first control to consider alongside ventilation. See Fume extractors and Welding safety equipment.

Fit and facial hair

A tight-fitting respirator only works if it seals to the face. Beards and stubble break the seal. Follow your workplace respiratory protection program for fit testing and training.

Always check the data sheet

Filter class, the contaminants a product protects against and the Australian Standard it is certified to differ between products. Match the respirator to the hazard using the safety data sheet and your risk assessment, and ask us if you are unsure. For more, see our respirator guide.

Respiratory protection FAQs

What do P1, P2 and P3 mean?

They are particle filter classes, from P1 (lowest) to P3 (highest). Choose the class to suit the dust or fume and your risk assessment. A P2 respirator suits most fine dust, and the Tecmen PAPR filters here are P3.

Does a valve matter on a P2 respirator?

A valve makes exhaling easier and helps in hot conditions. Frontier offers its P2 cup respirator with or without a valve, and the moulded respirator with a valve.

How long can I use a disposable respirator?

Disposable respirators are for single-shift use. Replace one when it is damaged, wet, dirty or harder to breathe through.

Can I wear a respirator with a beard?

A tight-fitting respirator needs a good seal against the skin, and beards and stubble prevent that. A powered respirator with a hood or helmet is an alternative, so ask us if you need one.

Do I need a PAPR for welding?

Not always. Ventilation and fume extraction are the usual first controls, and a PAPR is an option where they are not enough, such as in confined spaces. Follow your risk assessment and regulator guidance.

Does the P3 filter protect against gases?

No. A particle filter does not remove gases or vapours, so use the right protection for those hazards and check the safety data sheet.
