Choosing a Gates belt
Start with what the drive does. A V-belt transmits power by friction in a pulley groove, so the section (classical Z, A, B, C, D, E or narrow 3V, 5V, 8V, SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC) must match the groove, and sections are not interchangeable. A timing belt is positive drive, so tooth profile (HTD 3M, 5M, 8M, 14M, GT 3MGT, 8MGT, 14MGT or classical L, H, XL) and pitch must match the pulley. Notched and cogged belts such as QuadPower and Tri-Power bend more easily around small pulleys. Belts wear out early from incorrect tension and misalignment, so tension gauges and a laser alignment tool are worth having on site. If a belt keeps failing, see V-belt problems and solutions.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm section, length, tooth profile and drive rating against your drive before ordering, as belt specifications are not interchangeable between series.

How do I identify a Gates V-belt?

What is the difference between classical and narrow section V-belts?
They have different profiles and are not interchangeable. Classical sections are Z, A, B, C, D and E. Narrow sections are 3V, 5V, 8V and the metric SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC. Match the belt section to your pulley groove.
What are QuadPower and Tri-Power belts?
They are notched belts. QuadPower 4 notch belts are listed in XPZ, XPA and XPB narrow sections, and Tri-Power notched (cogged) belts in classical AX and BX sections. The notches help the belt flex around smaller pulleys.
Do you have Poly Chain GT Carbon belts?
