Choosing a welding helmet
Auto-darkening
An auto-darkening helmet lets you see the workpiece clearly before the arc strikes, then darkens as it starts. That means you can position the electrode or torch accurately without lifting the helmet. It is the common choice for professional and production welding.
Viewing area
Mega View and Wide View helmets give a larger viewing window, which helps with joint tracking and positional work. Trade helmets suit general workshop welding where the larger window is not essential.
Shade range and process
Check that the helmet’s shade range suits your process and current, including low-amp TIG. Variable shade helmets let you adjust to the job. For shade guidance, see our welding helmet shade guide.
Flip front
A flip-front helmet lifts the electronic lens clear for grinding, tacking and inspection, so you do not need to take the helmet off between tasks.
PAPR
A PAPR helmet supplies filtered air to the welder as well as protecting the eyes and face. It is an option where ventilation and fume extraction are not enough, such as in confined spaces or when welding stainless or galvanised steel. Your risk assessment and regulator guidance decide when respiratory protection is required.
Lenses and spares
Replace scratched or pitted cover lenses promptly. Lenses and spare parts are listed under Welding safety equipment.
Always check the data sheet
Shade range, reaction time, sensor count, battery type and the Australian Standard a helmet is certified to differ between models. Confirm these on the product page or data sheet before you buy, and ask us if you are unsure what suits your process.

Welding helmet FAQs
Do I need to lift an auto-darkening helmet before striking the arc?
No. You can see the workpiece clearly before the arc strikes, and the lens darkens as the arc starts. A fixed-shade helmet has to be flipped down into position before you weld.
What is the difference between BossSafe and Bossweld helmets?
They are two separate brands. BossSafe supplies the Vixen, Inferno, Orion, Delta, Graphite, Blaze, Urban, Patriot, Siren and Scorpion helmets, and Bossweld supplies the Forge, X-Sight and Black Lift Front helmets.
What is the benefit of a Mega View or Wide View helmet?
A larger viewing window helps you track the joint and see the weld pool, especially in structural and out-of-position work. A trade helmet suits general workshop welding.
What does a flip-front helmet let me do?
It lets you lift the electronic lens clear for grinding, tacking and inspection without removing the whole helmet, such as with the Tecmen iEXP 950S.
When do I need a PAPR welding helmet?
A PAPR helmet supplies filtered air as well as protecting your eyes and face. It is an option where ventilation and fume extraction are not enough, such as confined spaces or welding stainless or galvanised steel. Follow your risk assessment and regulator guidance.
How do I choose the right shade?
Match the helmet’s shade range to your process and current, and check the data sheet for the range. Our welding helmet shade guide is a good place to start.
