Choosing a face shield or visor
Not a welding helmet
A shade 5 visor is not dark enough for arc welding. Use a welding helmet for MIG, TIG and stick work, and never look at an arc through a clear or shade 5 visor.
Clear or shade 5
Choose a clear visor for grinding, chipping, slag removal and general face protection. Choose a shade 5 visor for oxy cutting and gas welding.
Build your own set
The harness is sold without a visor, so you can add the clear visor, the shade 5 visor, or both to suit the job. The visors are replacement visors for the Bossweld Face Shield With Clear Visor, and the product pages list what each one suits. For other helmets and spares, see Welding safety equipment.
Replacing visors
Replace a visor when it is scratched enough to affect vision or has been cracked or hit hard. A damaged visor protects less than it should.
Always check the data sheet
Shade, impact resistance and the Australian Standard a product is certified to should be confirmed on the product page or data sheet before you buy. If your site requires PPE certified to a particular standard, contact us to confirm first.

Welding visor FAQs
Can I use a face shield to look at the welding arc?
No. A shade 5 visor is not dark enough for arc welding, and a clear visor gives no protection from an arc at all. Use a welding helmet for MIG, TIG and stick work.
What is the difference between a face shield and a welding helmet?
A welding helmet has a filter that protects against the arc, and is needed for arc welding. A face shield protects your face and neck from impact and splash during grinding and finishing, and with a shade 5 visor it suits oxy cutting and gas welding.
Should I choose a clear or shade 5 visor?
Choose clear for grinding and general face protection, and shade 5 for oxy cutting and gas welding.
Do the visors fit the harness?
The harness and yellow browguard is made for the Bossweld face shield system and takes the lift-up Bossweld clear and shade 5 visors. Check the product page if you are fitting them to anything else.
When should I replace a visor?
Replace it when it is scratched enough to affect your vision, or after it has cracked or taken a hard hit.
