Choosing a safety harness

Start with the task, because it decides which type of harness you need. A fall arrest harness has attachment points for stopping a fall. A work positioning harness has side D rings so you can hold position at a pole, tower or structure. A restraint harness stops you reaching the edge in the first place. Confined space, rigging, pole work, electrical, scaffolding and water work each have a listed harness above. Then check the sizing, as some harnesses are one-size-fits-all (medium to 2XL) and others come in sizes.

A harness only works as part of a system. You also need a compatible lanyard, inertia reel or lifeline, a suitable anchor point, and a rescue plan, and the harness must be fitted correctly and inspected before each use.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the harness suits the task, the user's size and weight, and the rest of your fall protection system, and follow the manufacturer's instructions and your site's procedures.

Safety harness FAQs

What is the difference between fall arrest, work positioning and restraint harnesses?

A fall arrest harness is designed to hold you if you fall. A work positioning harness has side D rings so you can work supported at a pole or structure. A restraint harness keeps you from reaching a fall hazard. Check the product listing for which use the harness is intended for.

What size harness do I need?

Several Austlift Maxi harnesses are listed as one-size-fits-all (medium to 2XL), and others come in small, medium to 2XL, 2XL+ and 3XL. B-Safe harnesses are listed in sizes from small to 4XL. Check the sizing and weight range on the data sheet.

Do you have a harness for electrical work?

We list the Austlift Maxi Pro Electric Tower harness and the B-Safe Evolve Dielectric Pole Work harness. Check the data sheet to confirm it suits your electrical work.

Is there a harness for confined spaces?

Yes. The B-Safe Evolve Confined Space harness has a quick connect buckle and is listed in small, medium, large and XL.

Does a harness come with a lanyard?

Some listings include a lanyard, such as the B-Safe all purpose harness with a 2m web lanyard and the Austlift scaffolder kit. Otherwise you need to choose a compatible lanyard or reel separately.

How often does a harness need inspecting?

Inspect it before every use, and follow the manufacturer's instructions and your site's procedures for formal inspections. Remove any harness that is damaged or has been involved in a fall.
