Choosing a padlock
- Safety or security: use safety padlocks for lockout and keep them for that job, so a safety padlock on equipment always means it is isolated. Use the keyed and combination padlocks for access security.
- Keyed different or keyed alike: keyed different (KD) padlocks each have their own key. Keyed alike (KA) padlocks in a set share one key, which suits a supervisor or a single person managing several locks. Choose to suit your site lockout procedure.
- Colour: the Master Lock 410 range is listed in black, blue, green, orange, purple, red, teal and yellow, depending on the model. The Brady safety padlocks are listed in red, blue, green and yellow, with black on some models.
- Shackle and body: check the shackle material (steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, boron or boron carbide, or nylon) and size against your hasp, chain or hole. Several listings give three dimensions such as 8 x 62 x 23mm, so confirm on the data sheet which figure is which before you match a padlock to a hasp.
- Outdoors or damp areas: look at the Weather Tough, stainless steel and solid brass models.

What is the difference between a safety padlock and a security padlock?
A safety padlock is the colour-coded personal lock used to isolate equipment in a lockout program. A security padlock keeps gates, sheds, toolboxes and cabinets closed. Both are in this range, so choose by the job and keep safety padlocks for lockout only.
What does keyed alike and keyed different mean?
Keyed different (KD) padlocks each open with their own key. Keyed alike (KA) padlocks in a set share a key, so one key opens every padlock in the set. The Master Lock safety padlocks are available in KA sets of 3, 4, 6 and 10, and the multi-pack brass padlocks are listed as keyed alike.
