Choosing a hard hat

Vented or non-vented

A vented hard hat has openings in the shell for airflow, which helps in hot outdoor conditions. A non-vented shell runs warmer. If your site has an electrical hazard, confirm the helmet’s electrical rating on the data sheet before you choose, because vented shells have openings.

Warden hats and colours

Warden hats are colour-coded for emergency roles such as chief warden, fire warden and first aid. Colours and roles are set by the site safety plan or principal contractor, so confirm the scheme in use on your site before ordering. See our hard hat colours guide and hard hat FAQs.

Harness

Check whether the hard hat has a ratchet harness or pin-lock harness and which suits the wearer. A comfortable harness is more likely to be worn properly.

Replacing hard hats

Replace a hard hat after any significant impact, and when the shell is cracked, chalking or worn, or the harness is damaged. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for service life and the date stamp on the shell. More in our hard hat guide.

Always check the data sheet

Impact and electrical ratings, the Australian Standard a helmet is certified to and harness type differ between models. Confirm these on the product page or data sheet, and ask us if you are unsure what suits your site.

Hard hat FAQs

What is the difference between a vented and non-vented hard hat?

A vented hard hat has openings in the shell for airflow, which helps in hot conditions. A non-vented shell is sealed and runs warmer. If you have an electrical hazard, check the rating on the data sheet.

How often should a hard hat be replaced?

Replace it after any significant impact, and when the shell is cracked, chalking or worn, or the harness is damaged. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on service life and the date stamp inside the shell.

Do warden hat colours follow a national standard?

Colours and role labels are normally set by the site safety plan or principal contractor, so confirm the scheme in use on your site before ordering warden hats.

Can I fit a cap lamp to a hard hat?

Yes, the Tuffgard Miners Non Vented Hard Hat comes with a metal lamp bracket for a cap lamp.

Do I need to replace the harness if the shell looks fine?

Check the harness separately. Replace it if it is cracked, frayed or has lost its elasticity, even when the shell looks fine.

How do I stop a hard hat dropping when working at height?

A hard hat lanyard tethers the hat to the wearer. The Ergodyne Squids 3155 elastic lanyard clamps to the hat, and our Height safety range has more.
