Choosing a flap wheel

First decide how the wheel mounts. Shaft-mounted wheels fit a drill or die grinder with a 6 mm shank, bore and flange-mounted wheels need a mounting plate or arbor, and angle grinder wheels fit the M14 thread. Then choose the grit: lower numbers remove more material, higher numbers leave a finer finish. Non-woven and nylon web wheels are for finishing and blending rather than stock removal. Check the material listed in the product title, for example the Polinox wheels listed for stainless steel. Always check the data sheet for dimensions, bore or shank size and maximum speed before ordering.

Flap Wheel FAQs

What is the difference between a flap wheel and a flap disc?

A flap wheel has abrasive flaps arranged around a hub or shaft and works on its edge, which suits contours and blending. A flap disc is a flat disc that fits an angle grinder and works on its face. Both are in AIMS Industrial's abrasives range.

What is a fan grinder?

Fan grinders are Pferd's shank-mounted abrasive heads. They have a small flap or felt head on a shaft and run in a drill or die grinder for finishing and working in tight spots. The range includes many head sizes, from small 10 mm heads to 80 x 50 mm.

How do I choose the grit?

Use a lower grit number to remove more material and a higher number for finer finishing. Non-woven and nylon web wheels, graded coarse, medium and fine, are for finishing and blending. Check the data sheet for the recommended speed range before use.
