Choosing a castor or wheel

Start with the mount: plate castors bolt to a flat plate, stem castors fit a tube or socket, and bolt hole castors use a single centre bolt. Then choose swivel or fixed, and add a brake, directional lock or total lock if the load needs to stay put or track straight. Match the wheel to the floor and the environment, and check the load rating per castor, not just the weight of the trolley. A larger wheel diameter generally rolls over gaps and thresholds more easily than a small one. Use a stainless castor where the equipment is washed down, and a pneumatic or flat free wheel on uneven ground.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the load rating, mount dimensions, wheel size and brake type before you rely on a castor or wheel.

Castors and wheels FAQs

What is the difference between a castor and a wheel?

A castor is a complete assembly: a wheel in a swivel or fixed fork with a plate, bolt hole or stem to attach it to your frame. A wheel is the rolling part on its own, used to replace a worn wheel or to fit into your own fork.

What is the difference between plate, stem and bolt hole castors?

A plate castor bolts to the base through a mounting plate. A stem castor has a stem that fits into a tube or socket. A bolt hole castor mounts on a single bolt through the centre. Match the mount to the frame you are fitting it to.

What is the difference between a brake, a directional lock and a total lock?

A brake stops the wheel turning. A directional lock fixes the swivel so the castor tracks straight. A total lock locks both the wheel and the swivel. Colson and Rhombus list total lock and direction lock castors.

Do you have stainless steel castors?

Yes. The EasyRoll G7 series is listed in stainless steel, with swivel plate, fixed plate and bolt hole options.

What wheels suit uneven ground?

Pneumatic wheels and flat free (puncture proof) wheels, with replacement tyres and inner tubes also listed. Check the wheel size and bearing type on the product page.

Can I buy just a replacement wheel?

Yes. Loose wheels are in the standard wheels and pneumatic and flat free wheels collections. Match the wheel diameter, width, bore and bearing type to the original.

Can you help me pick a castor?

Yes. Tell us the load per castor, the floor and how the castor will mount, or call (02) 9773 0122, and we will point you to the right one.
