Choosing a centre drill
Choose by size and material. The numbered sets (#1 to #5) cover the common sizes, while the single bits are listed in several sizes. HSS suits general work. Carbide wears longer but is more brittle, so it needs a rigid set-up and a firm, stable machine. Check the type (plain or A type) against the centres you are cutting. Always check the data sheet.

Centre Drill FAQs
What is a centre drill used for?
A centre drill makes a short, stiff hole with a 60 degree countersink. It is used to start accurate holes and to cut the centre holes that support work between lathe centres.
Should I choose HSS or carbide?
HSS is the general-purpose choice. Carbide lasts longer in harder materials but is more brittle, so use it on a rigid machine and set-up. The Sutton D319 is TiCN coated.
What sizes are available?
The 5 piece sets cover sizes #1 to #5, and the single bits are listed in 6 to 8 sizes. Check the variant lists, or call us on (02) 9773 0122.
