Cobalt drills earn their place on stainless steel and other tough materials, where a standard HSS bit loses its edge quickly. For mild steel, aluminium and timber, a standard HSS jobber is usually enough. Whatever you are drilling, use cutting lubricant, keep a steady feed rather than letting the bit rub, and match speed to the material and drill diameter. Cobalt alloyed into the steel improves heat resistance, so the cutting edge lasts longer in tough materials such as stainless steel. It does not make the drill unbreakable, so lubricant and correct speed and feed still matter.
Which cobalt drill sets can I buy?
Metric sets run from 1mm to 6.5mm, 10mm or 13mm in 19 and 25 piece cases, and imperial sets from 1/16 inch to 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch in 21 and 29 piece cases. Bordo and Sutton also offer left hand sets and spotting sets, and Bordo has two tier cases.
