Contact Cleaners for Electrical and Electronic Equipment

Contact cleaners remove dust, oil, grease and light contamination from electrical contacts, connectors, switches, relays and circuit boards. They are solvent products that evaporate, so they are used with the equipment isolated and de-energised. AIMS Industrial stocks contact cleaners and electrical parts cleaners from CRC, WD-40, Molytec and Dy-Mark, plus freeze spray and electric motor cleaners.

Choosing a Contact Cleaner

Flammable or non-flammable. Dy-Mark Protech offers both a flammable contact cleaner and a non-flammable electrical parts cleaner. Where flammable aerosols are not permitted on site, choose a non-flammable product and check the label.

General contact cleaning. CRC Contact Cleaner (four sizes), the WD-40 Specialist Fast Drying Contact Cleaner and the Molytec M866 are general-purpose aerosols for contacts, connectors, switches and circuit boards. The CRC Automotive Electronic Cleaner is aimed at vehicle electrics and sensors.

Precision and residue-sensitive jobs. The Dy-Mark Protech Isopropyl Alcohol Precision Cleaner suits jobs where an alcohol-based cleaner is preferred. Check the label for materials compatibility.

Electric motors and larger equipment. The CRC Lectra Clean Electric Motor & Equipment Cleaner (TCE free) comes as a 400g aerosol or a 4L container for cleaning motors and electrical equipment. For heavier degreasing of electrical parts, see degreasers.

Fault finding. CRC Freeze Spray is not a cleaner. It is a non-flammable freeze spray used to cool a component so a thermal intermittent fault can be located.

Using Contact Cleaners Safely

Isolate and de-energise the equipment first, and allow the solvent to evaporate fully before reconnecting power. Test on a hidden area before use on plastic housings, as some solvents can attack acrylic and polycarbonate. Do not use chlorinated solvents near welding or other ignition sources, as they can form toxic gases. Read the label and SDS for each product. For more on selection, see our Contact Cleaner Guide.

People Also Ask — Contact Cleaners

Q: How do I choose between a flammable and a non-flammable contact cleaner?

Choose a non-flammable product where flammable aerosols are not permitted on site or where there is an ignition risk. Flammable contact cleaners are common for general electrical maintenance with the equipment isolated. The product title and label state which type it is.

Q: Is it safe to use contact cleaner on plastic housings?

Not always. Some solvents can attack acrylic and polycarbonate, so test on a hidden area first and check the label for materials compatibility.

Q: Do I need to turn the power off before using contact cleaner?

Yes. Isolate and de-energise the equipment before cleaning, and let the solvent evaporate fully before reconnecting power.

Q: Can I use a chlorinated cleaner near welding?

No. Chlorinated solvents can form toxic gases when exposed to welding arcs or other ignition sources, so keep them away from welding work.

Q: What is freeze spray used for?

Freeze spray cools a component quickly so that thermal intermittent faults and shorts can be located. It is a fault-finding aid rather than a contact cleaner.

Q: What brands of contact cleaners does AIMS stock?

AIMS stocks contact cleaners and electrical parts cleaners from CRC, WD-40, Molytec and Dy-Mark.
