Choosing a digital caliper
Choose the range to cover your parts, and the protection level for the workshop: IP54 resists splashes, while IP67 models are listed as coolant proof for machine shop use. An absolute encoder keeps its position when switched off, so you don't need to re-zero it. SPC output is a data port for connecting the caliper to a data collection system. Always check the data sheet for the range, resolution, accuracy and output of the exact caliper before you order.

Digital Caliper FAQs
What does IP67 coolant proof mean?
IP67 is a protection rating for dust and water. The Mitutoyo and Dasqua IP67 calipers are listed as coolant proof, so they suit machine shop environments where coolant reaches the tool.
What is an absolute encoder?
An absolute encoder remembers the position of the jaws, so the caliper does not lose its reference when it is switched off or the battery is changed.
What is SPC output?
It is a data output on the caliper that lets you send readings to a data collection or statistical process control system. Models without SPC output show the reading on the display only.
