Choosing a hammer
Start with the job. An engineer's hammer is for general metalworking, marking and fitting. A club hammer, or drilling hammer, has a heavier head for striking chisels, punches and masonry drills. A copper/rawhide hammer has a soft face that drives parts without marring them, so it suits assembly work on finished surfaces.
Choose the head weight for the work, and a handle that suits you. A timber handle such as ash absorbs shock, and a plastic or composite handle is hard-wearing. Check the head is fixed firmly before use, and wear eye protection.
Always check the data sheet. Confirm the weight, face type and suitability for your task, and never strike a hardened hammer face against another hardened tool unless the maker says it is designed for it.
