Choosing an engineers square
Pick a blade length that suits the workpiece: shorter squares reach into tight spots, longer ones give a bigger reference edge on larger parts. Choose a graduated square if you also want to read measurements off the blade. A square is only as good as its handling, so store it where it will not get knocked or dropped, and check it against a known reference from time to time. Always check the data sheet for the accuracy grade and tolerance of the square you are buying. Engineers Squares FAQs
What is the difference between an engineers square and a combination square?
An engineers square is a fixed 90 degree reference used to check and mark right angles. A combination square has an adjustable head on a ruled blade, so it can do more jobs from one tool. Both are available from AIMS.
How do I check that an engineers square is still accurate?
Hold the square against a straight reference edge and scribe a line along the blade. Flip the square over and scribe again. If the two lines do not coincide, the square has an error and should not be used where accuracy matters.
What sizes of engineers square do you list?
The P&N stainless steel squares come in 100, 150 and 200mm, plain or graduated. Check the Maxigear listing for its size. If you need something else, call (02) 9773 0122 and we'll see what we can source.
