Choosing a hoist

Start with the load and how far you need to lift it. Choose a hoist with the capacity to cover the heaviest load, and check the lift height suits the job. Then check your power supply. Single phase hoists suit sites with a 240V supply, and three phase hoists need a three phase supply. If you need to move the load sideways as well as up and down, look at the model with an electric trolley, or add a trolley or beam clamp.

Electric hoists suit repeated lifting. An air hoist is an option where compressed air is available and electric equipment is not wanted, and the JDN mini is listed with a food grade design for hygiene-sensitive areas. For occasional lifting by hand, see chain blocks.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm capacity, lift height, speed, duty rating and supply for your application, and never lift people with a hoist.

Related ranges

A hoist needs a safe way to attach to the load and the structure above it. See chain blocks, girder clamps, lifting hooks, lifting shackles, cranes and crane scales. The full range is under lifting equipment.

Hoist FAQs

What is the difference between single phase and three phase hoists?

It is the power supply they run on. Single phase hoists suit sites with a 240V supply, and three phase hoists need a three phase supply. Check the supply at the lifting point before you choose.

What size hoist do I need?

Choose a hoist whose capacity covers the heaviest load you will lift, and check the lift height suits the job. If you are unsure, call us on (02) 9773 0122 with the load and lift height and we will help you narrow it down.

Which hoist brands do you supply?

This collection includes Toho, Hitachi, Pacific Hoists, Beaver and JDN hoists.

Do you have a hoist with a trolley?

Yes. The Toho TECH0206-ET is a single phase electric chain hoist with an electric trolley. You can also fit a separate trolley or beam clamp to many hoists, so check with us for the right match.

Is there a hoist for food areas?

The JDN Air Hoist Mini 500kg is listed with a food grade design. Check the data sheet to confirm it suits your hygiene requirements.

What is the difference between a hoist and a chain block?

An electric hoist lifts using a motor, so it suits repeated lifting with less effort. A chain block is operated by hand and suits occasional lifts. Both are covered in our lifting range.
