Choosing a needle descaler

Start with the surface. A bundle of needles follows an irregular profile and gets into tight spots, which is where a needle descaler earns its keep. On a large flat area, a wire brush or wire wheel may be quicker. Next, check your compressor. Air consumption and working pressure differ between models, and an undersized compressor starves the tool. The blow rate is in the title on four of the five descalers (3700 or 4000 BPM).

Needles are a wear part, so it pays to keep spares. The titles on the ARX-3NL-19 needle set and the ARX-252ATT attachment do not say which descaler they suit, so ask us to confirm fitment before you order. Wear eye and hearing protection whenever you run any of these. Always check the data sheet. It is the source for air consumption, working pressure and fitment, and we are happy to help you read it.

Needle Descalers & Attachments FAQs

What is a needle descaler used for?

It removes rust, mill scale, old coatings and weld spatter from steel. A bundle of needles hammers the surface, which suits irregular profiles and tight areas.

How is a needle descaler different from a chipping hammer?

A chipping hammer puts the blow through one chisel point. A needle descaler spreads it across a cluster of needles, so it follows the surface rather than cutting a single line. For heavy slag on a weld bead, a chipping hammer or flux chipper may be the better tool.

What air supply does a needle descaler need?

It depends on the model. Check the air consumption and working pressure on the data sheet and compare them with your compressor output. Send us the model and we will help.

Do the needles wear out?

Yes, needles are a wear part. The range includes a 19-piece replacement needle set (ARX-3NL-19) and a 19-needle descaling attachment (ARX-252ATT). Confirm which descaler they suit before ordering.

What is the flux chipper in this range?

The Trax ARX-JI260F is listed as a long air flux chipper. It is a chipping tool rather than a needle descaler, so it sits here as a companion for weld clean-up.
