Penlights and inspection lights

A good inspection light is one of the most used items in a toolbox or service van. This range covers pocket penlights for close inspection, plus rechargeable inspection lights with magnetic bases and hooks for hands-free work under a bonnet or at a machine. Penlights are from Coast and Macnaught. The inspection lights are from Macnaught and Alemlube, and there is a DuraVision base light for inspection mirrors.

Choosing a penlight or inspection light

Penlight or inspection light: a penlight clips into a pocket and suits close inspection in tight spaces. An inspection light has a larger body, more output and usually a magnet or hook, so it can hold itself in place and leave both hands free. The Macnaught WL-IL400 is the hands-free option here, with a magnetic base, two adjustable hooks and magnets on the back.

Output: more lumens is not always better. In a confined space a very bright light creates glare and hard shadows. For close inspection, the 54 to 120 lumen penlights are plenty. Use the 400 lumen inspection lights, or the 500 lumen HP3R, when you need to light a wider area.

Environment: the Macnaught lights are rated IP20, which suits dry workshop use. The Alemlube light is rated IP54, which gives it dust and splash protection. Match the rating to where the light will be used.

UV leak detection: the Alemlube work light includes a UV light for air conditioning leak inspections. UV only shows a leak where UV dye is already in the system.

Always check the manufacturer's data sheet for full specifications before you buy.

Penlights and inspection lights — common questions

What is the difference between a penlight and an inspection light?

A penlight is a slim, pocket-clip torch for close inspection in tight spaces. An inspection light is bigger, brighter and usually has a magnetic base, hooks or an adjustable handle so it can hold itself in place and leave both hands free.

How many lumens do I need for an inspection light?

For close inspection, a penlight of 50 to 120 lumens is generally enough. For lighting a wider area under a vehicle or inside a machine, 400 lumens or more suits better. Higher output is not always better, because a very bright light in a small space causes glare and shadows.

What do the IP20 and IP54 ratings on these lights mean?

IP20 means the light is protected against fingers and larger objects but has no protection against water, so it suits dry workshop use. IP54 means it is protected against dust build-up and against splashing water. The Macnaught lights are IP20 and the Alemlube work light is IP54.

Will the UV light on the Alemlube work light find air conditioning leaks on its own?

No. UV leak detection only works where UV dye has been added to the air conditioning system. The dye glows under the UV light and shows where it is escaping. Without dye in the system, the UV light has nothing to show.

Which light is best for hands-free work?

The Macnaught WL-IL400 is the hands-free choice in this range. It has a magnetic base, two adjustable hooks, two magnets on the back and a 180° adjustable handle, so it can sit on steel or hang from a bar or panel.

How are the Macnaught lights charged?

Both the WL-PL120 pen light and the WL-IL400 inspection light charge from a USB cable (5V DC, 1A). The pen light takes about 2.5 hours to charge and the inspection light about 4 hours.
