Petrolatum Tape and Overwrap Tape

Petrolatum tape goes on first, wrapped directly against the cleaned pipe, fitting, flange or valve. It is designed to conform to threads, bolts and irregular shapes and to keep moisture off the steel. Overwrap tape is applied over the top to protect the softer petrolatum layer from handling and damage. The two are used together as a system. Use the same width of each so the overwrap follows the inner wrap.

Choosing a width

Narrower tape (50 to 75 mm) suits smaller straight pipe. Wider tape (100 to 150 mm) suits larger pipe, flanges and valve bodies, and needs fewer wraps. Wrap in a spiral with overlap as the data sheet specifies. If you are not sure which width suits your pipe, contact our team.

Preparation

Remove loose scale and old coating and degrease the surface before wrapping. Check the data sheet for the preparation the tape needs on your job. See Degreasers for surface cleaning.

Leak Testing and Tagging

A CRC leak detector is sprayed over a pressurised joint, and bubbles show where it is leaking. The water-based detector suits general pipe joints and fittings, and the HVAC aerosol is made for heating, ventilation and refrigeration work, so check the label for the gases it can be used on. The soap-and-water bubble test with the Dixon plumbers soap bar does a similar job. When a line is isolated for work, tag it with a maintenance record tag so nobody reinstates or re-pressurises it until the work is cleared.

People Also Ask — Pipe Maintenance & Repair

What is petrolatum tape used for?

It is wrapped around steel pipe, fittings, flanges and valves to protect them from corrosion, including on buried and exposed pipework. It conforms to threads, bolts and irregular shapes.

What is the difference between petrolatum tape and overwrap tape?

Petrolatum tape is the inner layer applied against the pipe. Overwrap tape goes over it to protect it mechanically. They are used together.

What size petrolatum tape do I need?

It depends on the pipe or fitting. Narrower tape of 50 to 75 mm suits small straight pipe, and 100 to 150 mm suits larger pipe, flanges and valves. Contact us with your pipe size and we will help.

Do I need to degrease the pipe before wrapping?

Yes. Oil, grease and loose material can stop the tape from sticking and shorten the life of the protection. Check the data sheet for the preparation needed.

How do I find a leak on a pipe joint?

Spray a leak detector such as CRC Leak Detector over the pressurised joint and look for bubbles, or brush on a soap-and-water solution made with the Dixon plumbers soap bar.

What is a maintenance record tag for?

It marks pipework or plant that is isolated for repair or inspection, so that nobody reinstates or re-pressurises it until the work is cleared.
