Choosing a self drilling screw

Start with what you are fixing and what to. The drill point has to be matched to the thickness of the steel, so check the data sheet for the drilling capacity of the screw before you order. Then choose the head: hex or hex flange for driving with a nutsetter, countersunk where the head must sit flush, and pan, wafer or button head for low profile fixing of sheet. Torx security screws are for locations where tamper resistance matters.

For the finish, zinc plated screws suit general indoor and protected use. Stainless steel (304 and 316 are listed here) is the choice where corrosion is a concern. Match the screw material to the material it is fixed into, and use a matching nutsetter or screwdriver bit so the head is not damaged.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the size, drill capacity, finish and corrosion class before you order, especially for roofing, cladding and structural fixing.

Self Drilling Screw FAQs

What is a self drilling screw?

A self drilling screw (Tek screw) has a drill point that cuts its own hole as it is driven, then forms the thread, so no pilot hole is needed.

What does AIMS list in self drilling screws?

We list 21 products: Inox World stainless steel countersunk, pan, wafer, hex flange and security Torx screws, Champion screws, Hobson packs and anchor screws, and assortment kits and refills.

Do you have stainless steel self drilling screws?

Yes. Inox World screws are listed in 304 (A2) and 316 (A4) stainless steel, in countersunk, pan, wafer and hex flange styles, plus Torx security screws in stainless steel.

How do I know the screw will drill through my steel?

Drilling capacity depends on the drill point and the screw size, so check the data sheet for the maximum steel thickness before you order. If you are unsure, call us with the steel thickness and we can help.

What is the difference between self drilling and self tapping screws?

A self drilling screw drills its own hole as well as forming the thread. A self tapping screw forms a thread in a hole that is already there. See our self tapping screws range for those.

Do you sell assortment kits?

Yes. We list Champion CA1782 and CA530 kits, a Hobson 8-10G zinc yellow kit, and Champion refill packs for self drilling and Torx screws.
