Choosing a truss or dome head rivet

Start with the rivet size and the thickness of the material you are joining. Check the listing for the size code or dimensions and the grip range, and size the hole to suit. A truss or dome head gives a wider, lower bearing surface than a standard head, which suits thin or soft sheet. Open type rivets are the general choice, sealed rivets are for joints where the mandrel hole needs to be closed, and multi-grip rivets cover a wider range of material thickness.

Match the rivet material to the material you are fixing: aluminium for aluminium sheet, steel for steel, and stainless steel where corrosion is a concern. The painted head rivets are listed in 23 colours, so check the colour against your sheet before you order. You need a rivet gun to set them, see our rivet tools.

Always check the data sheet. Confirm the size, grip range, material and finish before you order.

Truss Head and Dome Rivet FAQs

What is a truss head or dome head rivet?

It is a blind rivet with a domed head. The head gives a wider, lower bearing surface than a standard head, so it spreads the load on thin or soft sheet.

What does AIMS list in this range?

We list 19 products: Hobson truss head and dome head rivets in aluminium, steel, Monel and copper, Champion aluminium and 304 stainless blind rivets, Inox World open type stainless rivets, and a kit.

Do you have stainless steel rivets?

Yes. Inox World open type rivets are listed in 304 and 316 (A4) stainless steel, and Champion has a 304 stainless refill.

What is the difference between open, sealed and peel rivets?

We list open type, sealed and peel dome head rivets from Hobson. Open type is the general choice, and sealed rivets are for joints where the mandrel hole needs to be closed. Check the listing for the details of each.

Do you have painted head rivets?

Yes. The Hobson truss (dome) head rivet in aluminium and steel is listed in 23 paint colours. Check the colour against your sheet before you order.

What tool do I need to set them?

A blind rivet gun that suits the rivet diameter. See our rivet tools range for hand and cordless guns, and air riveter tools for compressor-driven guns.
