Gates Sonic 550C Belt Tension Meter, ±1% Accuracy

The Gates 550C Sonic Tension Meter is an electronic instrument that reads the natural vibration frequency of a free belt span and instantly computes static belt tension from that frequency plus the belt span length, width and type. It works on V-belts and synchronous belts alike, reads out in pounds, kilograms, newtons or hertz, and shares its sensor range with Gates’ 505C/507C/508C sonic meters — so existing Flat Flexible, Cord or Inductive sensors carry across the family.

The 550C is the most accurate tension-measurement method Gates offers — it reads any belt type without contacting the belt, which makes it worth having on critical or high-value drives.
