Seagull Double Lip Viton Oil Seal 1 x 1-7/16 x 1/4" (1000-1437-250TCV)

Seagull imperial double lip oil seals, widths from 1/4 in to 1/2 in, in 25 sizes. Shaft diameters run from 1/2 to 3-1/2 in and housing bores from 1-1/8 to 4-1/2 in, and each size is a rotary shaft seal in Viton (FKM).

Each size carries a model code that gives the shaft diameter, housing bore and width in thousandths of an inch, followed by the type: for example 1250-2000-375TCV is a 1-1/4 in shaft, 2 in housing bore and 3/8 in wide seal, type TCV. The V on the end of the code marks the Viton version.

Model codes are the Seagull size codes; the SKU is the AIMS part number.

Selecting the right option

Choose the size from the options list. The first number is the shaft diameter and the second is the housing bore, both in inches. Width varies by size and is part of the option and model code, so check it before ordering.

Match the shaft diameter, the housing bore and the width. Go by the shaft and bore rather than the lip of the old seal, as the lip sits slightly smaller than the shaft it seals on. Width is usually the least critical of the three, provided the housing has the depth.

Type TC is the double lip version, with a second lip on the outer side that helps keep dust and dirt off the main lip; type SC is single lip, suited to cleaner conditions.

NBR suits mineral oils and greases in general machinery. Viton is chosen where the seal runs hot or meets aggressive fluids, and this page is the Viton version of the range.

Fitting and use

Fit the seal with the main lip facing the fluid you are keeping in, press it in square using a tool that bears on the outer face of the seal, and avoid hammering directly on the seal.

Lubricate the lip with the system oil or grease before assembly, and cover keyways, splines, threads or sharp shoulders with a sleeve or tape so they cannot cut the lip as it passes over.

Run the seal on a clean, smooth shaft with a lead-in chamfer and no burrs. A shaft finished to ISO h11 is the usual guide for rotary shaft seals.
