Sando steel club hammer, 16"

Sando developed its unbreakable-handle sledge hammer in 1975 for hard rock mining conditions in South Africa, and its range of unbreakable striking tools has sold more than 6 million units worldwide.

Both have four steel rods in the handle. The handle is a series of high tensile spring steel rods with very strong, abrasion-resistant rubber moulded around them under a high compression factor, and the head is vulcanised to the rubber during moulding and secured to the rods by a positive locking plate.

Choosing the right option

Both variants carry the same 1.8kg head, so the choice is handle length: the 305mm (12") handle is the shorter option and the 406mm (16") handle the longer, with four rods in either handle. For heavier work see the Sando sledge hammers below.
