An insert bearing is the replaceable bearing inside a plummer block (pillow block), flange or take-up unit. UC type inserts have a wide inner ring and a spherical O.D., so they seat in a housing with a matching spherical bore.

Selecting the right option

Every size on this page has a metric bore (shaft sizes in mm). Match the bore to the shaft you have: an inch shaft needs the imperial version of the same insert, which is a different size.

Set screw (grub screw) inserts lock to the shaft with set screws spaced 120 degrees apart, so they suit a plain shaft of the matching bore size.

Fitting and use

Check the load and speed against the catalogue figures in the Model Details before ordering, and apply a suitable safety factor. The allowable rotating speed in the catalogue is a standard value: it falls to 80% for units fitted with covers, and a loose fit between shaft and inner ring reduces it further.

Tighten the set screws once the insert is in position on the shaft.

Match the insert to a housing with the same size number: the spherical O.D. seats in a matching spherical housing bore.
