Power Options
- 12V Winches — Vehicle-mounted, powered directly from the vehicle battery. Standard for 4×4 recovery, trailers, and farm equipment. Draws significant current, so heavy-duty vehicle electrics are essential.
- 240V Winches — Workshop or fixed-installation use. Powered from mains electricity. More consistent power delivery and higher duty cycles for sustained pulling.
Capacity Range
Electric winches range from 500 kg (light boat trailers, small recovery jobs) through to 4,500 kg (full vehicle recovery, heavy industrial use). Capacity is the single-line pull rating — use pulley blocks and rigging to increase mechanical advantage if needed.
Rope Options
- Synthetic Rope (Dyneema/Spectra) — Lightweight, won't sink in water, excellent for marine use. Less weight on the winch mounting, but higher cost.
- Steel Wire Rope — Traditional, lower cost, extremely durable. More weight on the winch bracket. Must be properly maintained and regularly inspected.
Mounting Configurations
Winches bolt to bullbars (vehicles), trailer frames, workshop jib cranes, or fixed anchor points. Installation must be solid — a winch under load creates significant forces.
