Choosing the Right Eye Bolt or Eye Nut

Eye bolt selection for lifting applications must consider working load limit (WLL), loading angle, thread size and the material environment.

• Swivel vs Fixed Eye Bolts: Swivel eye bolts rotate 360° on their shank and are designed to accept angular loads in multi-leg sling configurations. Standard fixed eye bolts have a significantly reduced WLL under angular loading — in some configurations as low as 25% of their straight-pull rating. Always use swivel eye bolts in any application where the sling angle deviates from vertical.
• Grade and Construction: G80 (Grade 80) weld-on lifting eyes offer the highest strength-to-size ratio and are welded directly to machinery and structural steel. DIN580 and DIN582 are standard European designs widely used in engineering applications. Stainless steel (316 or 304) is specified for corrosive environments.
