Lifting Shackles: Grade S Screw Pin and Safety Pin Dee and Bow Shackles
Shackles are the fundamental connecting hardware in any rigging system — linking slings, chains, and hooks into complete lifting configurations. AIMS Industrial stocks lifting shackles from Austlift and Beaver — covering Grade S screw pin dee shackles, screw pin bow (anchor) shackles, safety pin bow shackles, and Grade M black dee shackles in electrogalvanised, hot dip galvanised, and 316 stainless steel finishes.
The AIMS Shackles Range
Our shackles range is built around Austlift and Beaver — two of Australia’s most trusted rigging hardware brands — covering the dee and bow shackle types and grades required for Australian construction, mining, and marine rigging operations.
- Austlift Blue Grade S Screw Pin Dee Shackles: Austlift Grade S (high tensile alloy steel) screw pin dee shackles in electrogalvanised finish are the standard sling-to-load connection for general lifting rigging. The dee profile provides a narrow, inline load path and is used where the load is applied in a single direction along the shackle axis. Blue painted for Grade S identification per AS 3775.
- Austlift Blue Grade S Screw Pin Bow (Anchor) Shackles: Austlift Grade S screw pin bow shackles are used where multiple sling legs must be connected to a single anchor point, or where the load direction changes during the lift. The bow provides a wider bearing surface for multi-leg sling configurations.
- Austlift Safety Pin Bow Shackles: Austlift safety pin (bolt, nut, and cotter) bow shackles are for applications where the shackle pin may be subject to rotation during the lift — preventing the screw pin from unscrewing under load vibration or sling movement. Required for dynamic lifting, overhead travel, and applications where pin security cannot be verified after connection.
- Beaver Screw Pin Dee Shackles: Beaver screw pin dee shackles in electrogalvanised and hot dip galvanised finish (5mm–25mm) provide the same Grade S performance in a Beaver-branded option. Hot dip galvanised offers superior corrosion protection for outdoor, marine, and long-term outdoor storage applications compared to electrogalvanised.
- 316 Stainless Steel Shackles: Standard dee and bow shackles in 316 stainless steel for permanent marine, coastal, and chemical environment rigging applications where galvanised carbon steel would corrode and lose its WLL marking.
Shackle Selection and Safe Use
- Dee vs Bow: Use a dee shackle where the load is applied in one direction (e.g. connecting a single sling leg to a hook). Use a bow shackle where multiple legs converge at the shackle (e.g. master link replacement) or where the load direction changes during the lift.
- Screw Pin Security: Always screw the pin fully home and back off half a turn before use. Mouse (wire) the pin for applications where vibration or movement could unscrew it — or use a safety pin shackle for permanent overhead applications.
