How to Choose the Right Pump

Getting the pump wrong usually costs more than the pump itself — in downtime, seal failures, or contaminated product. Four factors decide the right choice:

  • Fluid type and compatibility. What you're pumping decides what the pump body and seals need to be made of. Diesel and oils suit cast iron, aluminium or standard polymer construction. Chemicals, acids and caustics need polypropylene or stainless steel with seals rated for that chemistry — Viton, EPDM or Buna-N, matched to the fluid. AdBlue/DEF needs its own dedicated stainless steel and polymer equipment; running AdBlue through a diesel pump (or vice versa) contaminates both and can damage a vehicle's SCR system.
  • Viscosity. Thin fluids like water and light oils move easily through centrifugal-type pumps (our submersible and drainage range, for instance). Thicker fluids — grease, heavy oils, viscous chemicals — need positive-displacement pumps such as diaphragm, rotary or lever pumps, which push a fixed volume through regardless of thickness.
  • Flow rate. Match the pump's output (litres per minute) to how fast you actually need to move the fluid and how big the container or tank is. A drum pump moving a few litres per stroke suits occasional top-ups; a bowser-style diesel pump or high-flow diaphragm pump suits daily bulk transfer.
  • Application and power source. 12V pumps suit vehicle-mounted and remote-site use. 240V electric and air-operated (pneumatic) pumps suit fixed workshop installations where power or compressed air is already available. For chemical dosing or slurry work, air-operated diaphragm pumps are usually the safest default — they run dry without damage and handle a wide range of fluids.

How do I size a pump for my application?

Work out three things: the flow rate you need (litres per minute), the head (the height or pressure the pump has to overcome to move the fluid where it's going), and fluid compatibility (chemistry, viscosity and temperature). Add a safety margin to your flow rate calculation, and check the manufacturer's pump curve to confirm performance at your actual operating point rather than just the pump's maximum rating.

What's the difference between a diaphragm pump and a drum pump?

A drum pump (rotary, syphon or lever) is a simple, usually manual pump designed to sit in a drum bung and draw fluid out — ideal for occasional transfer or dispensing. An air-operated diaphragm pump is a powered positive-displacement pump that can move higher volumes continuously and handle more viscous or abrasive fluids, at higher cost. For regular high-volume transfer, diaphragm pumps are usually the better investment.

Can I use a diesel pump for AdBlue?

No. AdBlue/DEF needs dedicated stainless steel and DEF-compatible polymer construction. Standard diesel pump materials corrode quickly in AdBlue and contaminate it, and cross-contamination between diesel and AdBlue equipment can damage a vehicle's SCR emissions system — an expensive repair. Always use dedicated AdBlue pumps, hoses, nozzles and meters, and never share equipment between the two fluids.

What pump do I need for a viscous fluid like grease or heavy oil?

Thin fluids move easily through centrifugal-style pumps, but grease and heavy oils need a positive-displacement pump — a diaphragm, lever or rotary pump that pushes a fixed volume of fluid through regardless of thickness. For grease specifically, a dedicated grease pump or grease gun matched to your container size and coupler type is the standard setup.

How do I stop cross-contamination when transferring different fluids?

Use dedicated pumps, hoses and fittings for each fluid type — never share equipment between diesel, AdBlue, chemicals and oils. Label containers and equipment clearly, and store dedicated gear separately where possible. This matters most for AdBlue, where even small contamination can cause expensive damage downstream.

How often should pumps and fittings be serviced?

It depends on duty cycle and fluid. General workshop use typically needs an annual seal check, with more frequent attention for pumps in continuous or abrasive/chemical service. Watch for leakage past seals, unusual noise, reduced flow at the same pressure, or vibration — these are early signs that seals, valves or other wear parts need replacing before the pump fails outright.
