A hose clamp is the simple but critical fastener that secures a flexible hose to a barbed fitting, pipe stub or connector — and the difference between a leak-free system and a callback is choosing the right hose clamp type, size and material for the service. Hose Clamp Types at a Glance

• Worm drive (gear) clamps: the most common type. A worm screw drives a slotted band around the hose. Adjustable across a 10–15mm range per size, reliable, easy to install with a screwdriver or socket. Sizes 00 to 5A cover hose ODs from ~10mm to ~140mm.
• Spring clips (constant tension): one-piece spring-loaded clamp that maintains tension as the hose material ages and compresses. Used by vehicle OEMs on fuel, coolant and emission hoses. Self-adjusting — no re-torque required.
• Mini clips: small-diameter spring clips for fuel and vacuum lines, brake hoses and small pneumatic lines on automotive and light industrial work.
• Pipe supports: bracket-mounted supports for fixed installations — preventing hose sag, vibration fatigue and abrasion against structure in plumbing, hydraulic and fluid system installations.

Selecting the Right Hose Clamp

• Match to hose OD plus fitting: hose clamp size is selected by the outside diameter of the hose with the fitting inside. Most worm drive clamp sizes have a 10–15mm adjustment range — select a clamp whose range brackets your hose OD with room to tighten.
• Stainless vs zinc-plated: 304 stainless clamps are essential for marine, chemical, food and outdoor environments. Zinc-plated clamps corrode in damp or outdoor conditions, contaminating fluid lines and losing clamping force.
• Band width drives clamping force: a wider 12mm band distributes load more evenly across the hose wall without cutting in — preferred for higher pressures or softer hose materials. 9mm bands are fine for low-pressure light-duty use.
• Spring vs worm drive: spring clips suit OEM-style applications where the hose will be replaced periodically. Worm drives suit shop fabrication and field installations where adjustability matters.
• Torque, don't crush: worm drive clamps should be tightened until snug, not crushed — over-tightening cuts into the hose wall and causes premature failure.
